“Statement of Justin Sweet, regarding an injury to a comrade, in early 2046. Statement number 380419, originally given the 19th of April, ‘53. Recorded March the 20th, 2070, by Issac Moon; head archivist of the Frozen Chariot Archive.
“Statement begins.
It was a long war. Not a fun time in my life. I was recruited at 16 to fight for the Union. I was told that the rebel states were seeking to overturn the federal power. Furthermore, I was told they were violent, killing civilians, families, and pillaging peoples homes.
They lied to me. I see this now. If I had only known the extent of the brainwashing I received before I joined. But at any rate, that is not why I am making a statement, so forgive my rambling.
During the initial invasion of Florida, we went after this one particular camp. I was never told about who they were supposed to be, but it was a very weird place. Its architecture was that of the ancient Greeks and Romans, but seemingly refined and definitely built in modern times.
Anyway, we were told we would be fighting alongside a specialized group that was trained to fight these people. Seemed odd considering we had trained to fight as well, but none of our company put up a fight. They were peculiar people, distant, but had an aura of power about them. They fought in mock battles a couple times a week, only using hand weapons. Even while training, they never touched guns.
2 weeks after meeting this group, we went into the camp in Florida. We scaled their walls and the group calling their selves “Northmen” began setting multiple buildings alight. Within minutes, we had the place surrounded, and ablaze. My brother Rudy and I were up in a tree near the entrance to the place. We had a great view of the camp from above, seeing near every building in the place. My statement starts here, so if you like, please skip to here.
As I said, my brother and I had a good view. I saw a small group of the residents of this camp attack some of our company. They had swords drawn, just like the Northmen. They attempted to stab a fellow named Theo Hayes. I didn't particularly like the man, so I wanted to see what the residents were like. The man wielding the blade looked to be just a kid, so I didn't want to kill him, even though was 16 at the time
Anyway, he stabbed the blade through Theo. Theo looked down and jumped back. The blade hadn't harmed him, just seemed to pass without resistance.
“What are you people!” He yelled, bringing his rifle up to the man’s head.
“Blake get over here.” The man replied.
“Oh no you don’t. Rebel scum.”
“Who you calling scum?” A new man walked up, presumably Blake. He pulled out a sword and immediately swung it at Theo. I didn’t take a shot, I assumed his sword would just pass through like the other, I was quite wrong. It tore directly through Theo’s torso, slicing through muscle, fat, and a few ribs. I saw part of Theo’s lung fall out, but right then, Rudy took a shot at Blake using his .308, missing his head by inches, then several more as Blake and the other residents fled. He finally hit Blake in the middle of his back, the shot tearing through and shooting fragments of bone out the exit wound in the man’s chest.
But that’s about it, I still see that image of a sword passing clean through a man as if he wasn’t there.
Statement ends.
I had River look into the statement; she found Mr. Sweet’s home address, but he was reluctant to answer any new questions regarding this statement. Quote “I have a new life now, kids, a family, I'm sure it was a misunderstanding or a misperception.”
Mr. Sweet, I am not so sure whether that’s true.
